Ditch instant oatmeal and try steel cut oats instead! Not only is instant oatmeal filled with sugar, it also contains added preservatives!
Doesn’t Steel Cut Oatmeal Take Longer to Cook?
Do you love instant oatmeal because it’s so convenient and easy to cook in the microwave? Well, let me let you in on a secret: you can cook any type of oatmeal in under 5 minutes in the microwave, not just instant!
Steel cut oats are also much smaller and almost rice like so you might need to get used to this difference. You can also use steel cut oats to introduce kids to oatmeal or oatmeal cookies before giving them the chewier, bigger pieces of rolled oats. It’s a great way to expose them to new flavors and textures!
Oats Take Way too Long to Cook in the Morning
If you hate using the microwave, you can always cook your oats the conventional way. Oats can usually can up to 30 minutes to completely cook but you can find the precooked rolled or steel cut oats that are then redried before being packaged. When they are precooked and redried, it cuts the cooking time in half.
Another great tip: try making overnight oats! Most recipes use rolled oats but you can definitely used steel cut if you like their texture better.
My mom also precooks a huge batch of oats that lasts her about 3-4 days so she doesn’t have to cook them every day. Eat them cold with fruit for a refreshing breakfast or warm them up!
If you’re thinking of ditching that sugar-laden instant oatmeal, try one of these steel cut oat recipes out! There are a ton of varieties on this list.
